Acorn Academy

Infant and Nursery School

Speech and Language Centre

Admissions

Parents who are considering sending their children to Acorn Academy are welcome to contact the school for an appointment with the Headteacher who will show them round.

Most of our children live in the areas of Witham surrounding our school.  However, some of the children who attend our speech and language provision come from a wider area, as ours is one of the few infant schools with a resource base for children with identified speech and language disorders.

As a fully inclusive school we welcome all children, regardless of disability, and work closely with parents and outside agencies to make any necessary adaptations both before admission and during a child’s time in our school.

Since September 2009, all children have started school full time in the September of the academic year in which they have their fifth birthday.  This change to our admissions policy has been very popular with parents and although some children have been very young when they have first started with us we have seen the huge benefit to them of attending full time for the whole of their Reception Year.

Parents who would like their child to start school in Year R at Acorn Academy will need to complete an application via the Essex County Council website below.

Applications for School Places Outside the Normal Admissions Round (Mid-year Admissions)

Please note that there is a variation to our determined Admission Policy for 2021-22 from 1 April 2022.

From 1 April 2022 any mid-year applications must be made directly to the school.  if there are any spaces in the year group an offer will be made.

All mid-year applications should be made directly to the school, using the mid-year application form available below, or via the school office.

Mid-Year applications (sometimes called in-year applications) are any application for a school place made to a year group, apart from September admissions to Reception (primary and infant schools)/Year 3 (Junior Schools).

For applications into existing year groups, a place will be offered when the number of pupils in the relevant year group is below the admission number for that year group.

Please note:  If a mid-year application is received during a school holiday period, we will respond as soon as possible when the school re-opens.

Nursery

Our nursery class opened on 1st May 1995.  Changes were made to the nursery provision from September 2017 to cater for the 15 hour universal entitlement and the 30 hour offer that is available to some parents.  Our nursery now has 36 places with the 15 hour offer being 9.00-12.00 every day.  Parents who are entitled to received 30 hours free nursery provision or those who wish to pay for extra hours can extend their child's day to 3.00.

Admission to the nursery is through application to the school.  If all spaces are filled, a waiting list is operated and families will be notified when a place becomes available for their child.

Children are eligible to start in our nursery at the beginning of the September after their third birthday. In the September after their fourth birthday they move to a Reception Class (Year R) either in this school or another school.  Parents need to apply to the Local Authority for a Year R place for their child even if their child has attended our nursery.

A brochure giving more details about our nursery provision is available from the school office.  Further details are also available on the 'nursery' tab under the 'key information' balloon on this website.
